County
Hampden County centers on Springfield, Chicopee, Holyoke and Westfield along the Connecticut River, with hill towns to the west and east. It has no coastline; none of its 23 municipalities is on the CZM coastal list (CZM).
The defining number for garage doors here is the postwar build-out. In the American Community Survey (2020-2024), 48% of Hampden County's housing units were built between 1940 and 1979, the highest share of any Massachusetts county, and 28% before 1940. Only 8% date from 2000 or later (ACS B25034). The median year built is 1959. Detached houses are 56% of units, and 62% of homes are owner-occupied (ACS B25024).
The Massachusetts Historical Commission inventory lists 18 local historic district areas in five municipalities and 57 National Register district areas. Springfield has several, from the Quadrangle-Mattoon Street district (1972) to Colony Hills (2016); others include Fairfield Avenue in Holyoke (2007) and the Longmeadow Historic District (2012) (MHC inventory). In a local district, MGL c.40C makes a street-visible garage door an exterior feature that needs a certificate before changing (c.40C §5 and §6).
A house from the 1950s or 1960s often has a one-car garage, either detached or tucked under, with a narrow opening by today's standards. Some still have the original one-piece tilt-up door, or a door converted from tilt-up to sectional. Those openings set the limits on what door and opener fit.
Older extension-spring doors, with springs running along the tracks, are common on these garages. We repair extension springs and fit safety cables if they're missing, or convert to torsion springs when the headroom allows.
Low headroom in a tuck-under garage may need a low-profile rail or a wall-mount opener. We service and install all opener brands, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie.
Replacing a tilt-up or a tired 1970s sectional with an insulated steel door is the typical project. We can source and install doors from Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr in sizes that fit older openings. MassGarage is family owned, with 15 years of experience.
