Half of South Hadley's housing units (50%) were built from 1940 to 1979. Eighteen percent predate 1940 and 11% are from 2000 or later, with a median year of 1961 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 67% of units, two- to four-unit buildings 12%, buildings of five or more 12% and attached houses 9% (ACS B25024). Seventy-seven percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and about 1% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists the Woodbridge Street Historic District (1983) and the South Hadley Canal Historic District (1992) on the National Register (MHC inventory). It lists no local historic district, so a garage door change doesn't need district approval.
Half of the housing is from the 1940s through the 1970s. These homes often have a one-car garage, attached or detached, with an original wood door or a thin steel replacement from decades ago. If the door is heavy to lift by hand, the springs have lost tension. A balanced door should stay in place when you let go halfway. See garage door tune-up.
Prewar homes near the older parts of town often have detached garages with low headers. Low-headroom track lets an overhead door fit, and a wall-mount opener frees the ceiling.
About a fifth of units are attached houses or in larger buildings. In associations, the board usually sets the door model and color. We match the approved door and can replace an owner's opener without changing the outside look.
Shared garages in two- to four-unit buildings get heavier use. A keypad with a code for each household is easier than sharing remotes.
The state home improvement chart says replacing a garage door may need a building permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We check with the town before starting.
Replace a cracked bottom seal before winter, and swap noisy steel rollers for nylon ones. See weatherstripping.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
