Hatfield's housing is a mix of village homes, postwar houses and some apartments. Thirty-four percent of units were built before 1940, 32% from 1940 to 1979 and 15% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1967 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 68% of units, attached houses 7%, two- to four-unit buildings 10%, buildings of five or more 11% and mobile homes 4% (ACS B25024). Seventy-five percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
The state inventory lists eight Hatfield entries on the National Register, including the Hatfield Center, Upper Main Street, North Hatfield, Bradstreet and Elm Street historic districts (MHC inventory). It shows no local historic district, so Register listing alone doesn't require approval for a new garage door.
The Building Commissioner's page says to apply for a building permit through PermitEyes, and notes that the Fire Department may require additional plan review and fees (Hatfield Building Commissioner). The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). If your job needs a permit, we file on PermitEyes.
Older homes along the village streets often have barns or detached garages behind them. The doors are often sliders or swing doors that no longer close well. If the opening is tall enough, a sectional door with an opener makes the building easier to use in winter. If not, we can rehang or repair the existing doors.
Houses from 1940 to 1979 usually have attached garages. Their tracks may be original, with newer doors hung on them. Mismatched hardware is a common cause of noise and binding. We replace worn rollers, hinges and bearings. See garage door rollers.
Battery-backup openers keep working through outages. If your opener is more than twenty years old, it may lack the safety features of new models.
For mobile homes with a detached shed or carport, a small door can be fitted if the frame is sound.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
