Concord's historic designations shape a lot of garage door work here. The MHC inventory lists ten, among them the American Mile (1961), Main Street (1962), North Bridge-Monument Square (1973), Barrett Farm (1972), Hubbard-French (1998), Church Street (2005) and Hubbardville (2018) districts. Several more appear on the National Register MHC inventory, including the Concord Monument Square-Lexington Road district (1977).
In a local district, the statute lists the type and style of doors visible from a public way among the exterior features the commission reviews (MGL c.40C §5 and §6). In Concord, that can include a garage or barn door seen from the road. Before you order a new door for a house in a district, ask the historic districts commission what it needs. A carriage house door in a style that suits the house is the usual choice on old barns and carriage sheds, and we can supply the specifications the commission asks for.
The median unit dates to 1969; 23% of units predate 1940, 42% are from 1940 to 1979 and 20% from 2000 or later (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 69% of units and buildings of five or more 18% (ACS B25024). Seventy-six percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
On farmsteads and older lots, the garage is often a barn or carriage shed with an opening that is too wide, too low or out of square for a stock door. We measure carefully and can fit low-headroom track. Heavy wood doors on old barns need springs sized to their real weight.
Outside the districts, Concord's capes, colonials and newer houses have ordinary two-car garages. Typical calls are a broken torsion spring, frayed cables and openers that need replacing.
The state's home-improvement chart lists garage door replacement as a "maybe" and new door installation as a "yes" for a building permit (mass.gov).
We install doors from Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
