Almost everyone in Halifax owns: 96% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Detached houses are 73% of units, attached units 8% and mobile homes 15% (ACS B25024), one of the higher shares in the region. The median unit was built in 1979; 13% predate 1940, 39% are from 1940 to 1979 and 16% from 2000 or later (ACS B25034).
The MHC inventory lists the Halifax Local Historic District and the Lyonville Historic District, both established in 2001. Under MGL c.40C §5 and §6, a district commission may review exterior features that can be seen from a public way, and doors are named among them. If your house is in either district and the garage faces the road, check with the historic commission before you pick a door.
Many Halifax houses have a detached garage or a garage-and-workshop building. These often have older extension springs along the horizontal tracks. Without safety cables, a broken extension spring can whip loose; we add cables or replace the system. See extension spring repair.
Garages next to manufactured homes are usually small, single doors with light-gauge steel. A dented section can often be replaced alone with panel replacement if the model is still made.
About one in six homes is from 2000 or later. Those usually have attached two-car garages and openers with photo-eye sensors; misaligned sensors are a typical call. A garage door repair visit sorts it out.
The state's chart flags door replacement as a "maybe" and new installation as a "yes" for a building permit (mass.gov).
With nearly every home owner-occupied, many Halifax doors have been in service for decades. Rollers, hinges and spring cycles all wear with age, and a worn door is harder on the opener.
Our doors come from Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr.
