Stockbridge has a large share of seasonal homes. About 43% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004). Detached houses are 84% of units, buildings of five or more 8% and two- to four-unit buildings 6% (ACS B25024). Eighty-three percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Thirty-three percent of units were built before 1940, 49% from 1940 to 1979 and 5% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1958 (ACS B25034).
The state inventory lists the Old Curtisville Historic District (1976), the Shadow Brook Farm Historic District (1988), the Main Street Historic District (2002), the Elm-Maple-South Streets Historic District (2004) and the Frelinghuysen-Morris House and Studio (2016) on the National Register (MHC inventory). No local historic district is listed in the inventory.
Lee's Shared Building Inspections Department has served Lee, Lenox, Great Barrington and Stockbridge since October 1, 2024. It reviews applications, issues permits and performs inspections (Lee Shared Building Inspections Department). The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). If a permit is needed, we file it with the shared department.
Older properties may have carriage houses or barns used as garages, with wide or arched openings. A custom carriage house door can fit them. We measure carefully and check the framing before ordering.
For a house that's empty for months, have the springs and cables checked before the season starts. A battery-backup opener and a smart controller help when you're away.
Nearly half the houses are from 1940 to 1979. Their garages often have newer doors on old track, which can loosen. A tune-up fixes that.
If the house is used by family or renters on weekends, test the door and the auto-reverse before each busy season. Replace remote batteries every year or two.
