Shirley's housing spans every era. Twenty percent of units predate 1940, 24% are from 1940 to 1979 and 26% from 2000 or later, with a median year of 1984 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 68% of units, buildings of five or more 15% and attached houses 11% (ACS B25024). Seventy-seven percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
The state inventory lists the Shirley Center Local Historic District (1973) (MHC inventory). It also lists Shirley Shaker Village (1976), the Shirley Center Historic District (1988) and the Shirley Village Historic District (1992) on the National Register (MHC inventory). In the local district, the commission reviews exterior changes visible from a public way (MGL c.40C §5 and §6). Ask the commission before replacing a garage door you can see from the street.
One home in five is from before 1940. Their garages are often small, detached and short on headroom. We use low-headroom track and a wall-mount opener where there's no room for a ceiling rail.
A quarter of the housing is from 2000 or later, and one unit in nine is an attached house. Townhouse associations often set the door model and color. We match the approved door and can replace the opener without changing the look.
Older doors may still have extension springs without safety cables. Adding cables, or converting to torsion springs, makes a broken spring less dangerous. See extension spring repair.
Under the state's home improvement chart, a replacement door may need a building permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with the town.
Wind and snowmelt get under a worn seal. New weatherstripping fixes drafts and water at the bottom.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
