Hampshire County

Worthington is a Hampshire County hill town of owner-occupied houses. Ninety-four percent of occupied homes are owned. Detached houses are 89% of units and two- to four-unit buildings 7% (ACS B25024). Thirty-six percent of units were built before 1940, 35% from 1940 to 1979 and 9% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1958 (ACS B25034). About 14% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists the South Worthington Historic District (2005) for Worthington on the National Register (MHC inventory). There's no local historic district, so a garage door change isn't reviewed because of Register listing alone.
With more than a third of houses built before 1940, many garages are in barns, sheds or ells added to the house. What we look at first on these:
If the answers are good, a sectional door goes in like it would on a newer garage. If not, we fix the framing or suggest low-headroom hardware.
About one unit in seven is seasonal. Garages left closed all winter come back with stiff rollers and, sometimes, a spring that snaps on the first lift. Lift the door by hand halfway before using the opener after a long absence.
A third of the houses are from 1940 to 1979. Their openers, if original or second-generation, may lack photo-eye sensors. Replace any opener that doesn't reverse when the beam is blocked. See garage door openers.
Use a lubricant rated for cold, and keep ice off the threshold.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with the town.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
