Attleboro's housing is younger than most Massachusetts cities'. The American Community Survey (2020-2024) gives a median year built of 1972; 24% of housing units predate 1940, 37% are from 1940 to 1979 and 15% were built since 2000 (ACS B25034). Detached single-family homes are 54% of units and 66% of homes are owner-occupied (ACS B25024).
The Massachusetts Historical Commission inventory reflects Attleboro's industrial past: its National Register districts include Hebronville Mill (1984), Dodgeville Mill (2018) and the Attleboro Jewelry Industry Historic District (2025) (MHC inventory). The layer lists no local historic district in the city.
The housing numbers suggest two kinds of garage: small detached garages behind the older quarter of the stock, much of it two-families (20% of units are in two- to four-unit buildings), and attached two-car garages on the houses built from the 1970s on.
For the 1970s to 1990s attached garages, the doors and hardware are now decades old. Expect torsion springs near the end of their cycle life, opener gears worn smooth and safety sensors knocked out of line. If a door reverses for no reason, the sensors are the first thing to check. Houses built since 2000 often have lighter doors where a dent or a slipped cable is the common problem; panel replacement can save a door if the model is still available.
For older detached garages, worn rollers, loose hinges and rot at the bottom are typical, and the right answer is sometimes a new door.
We can source doors from Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr, and we install and service openers of every type and brand, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie. Licensed and insured; proof of insurance, license and 1099 available on request.
For permits, the state's home-improvement chart lists door replacement as "maybe" and door installation as "yes" (mass.gov). Attleboro's building department decides.
