Hampshire County

Westhampton is a small Hampshire County town of owner-occupied houses. Ninety-four percent of units are single-family detached (ACS B25024), and 91% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Twenty-three percent of units were built before 1940, 41% from 1940 to 1979 and 16% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1969 (ACS B25034). About 14% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
About one unit in seven is held for seasonal use. A garage that's closed for a season needs a little care at each end.

Four in ten houses are from 1940 to 1979. Their attached garages have usually had one replacement door, often hung on the original track and brackets. If the door shakes or binds, the track may be loose or out of plumb. See off-track repair.
About one in six homes is from 2000 or later. Those doors and openers are now 10 to 25 years old, the age when springs and opener gears start to wear out.
Snow off the roof can pile against the door. Clear it before opening so the bottom section doesn't bend.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with the town.
Plenty of detached garages still have no opener. A manual door should lift with steady, light effort and stay where you leave it. If you have to fight it, the springs are out of adjustment, and that's a job for a technician, not a wrench.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
