Hanson's homes are mostly owner-occupied single-family houses. Detached homes make up 79% of units, 1-unit attached 7% and two- to four-unit buildings 11%, with very few larger buildings (ACS B25024). Eighty-nine percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The median unit was built in 1972; 23% predate 1940, 38% are from 1940 to 1979 and 20% from 2000 or later (ACS B25034).
Hanson has a number of ponds, and some of the older homes near them began as small seasonal cottages that were later winterized. Their garages tend to be detached, single-width and close to the ground, with doors that rot along the bottom. A new bottom section, a fresh seal or a lightweight steel replacement door is often the practical fix.
Ranches and raised ranches from the 1950s to 1970s often have a one- or two-car garage under the living space, where noise from the opener carries upstairs. A belt-drive opener is quieter. The colonials built since 2000 usually have two-car doors on torsion springs now nearing the end of their cycle life.
The town's online permitting lets applicants track an application, send attachments and pay the fee. "Homeowners are able to submit Building Permits & Electrical Permits only," and plumbing and gas permits come from a licensed plumber or gasfitter. "No permit is considered for review until the payment has been made" (Hanson online permitting). Building inspections are generally Monday to Thursday, 2:00 to 4:00 pm (Hanson inspection FAQ). On the state's chart, door replacement is a "maybe" for a permit and new installation a "yes" (mass.gov).
The MHC inventory lists the Camp Kiwanee Historic District on the National Register (2005). It is not a local historic district.
