Fitchburg has old housing and a lot of multi-family buildings. Forty-three percent of units were built before 1940 and the median unit dates to 1950; 36% are from 1940 to 1979 and 10% from 2000 or later (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 42% of units, two- to four-unit buildings 31% and buildings of five or more 20% (ACS B25024). Fifty-four percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
The MHC inventory lists the Monument Park Historic District as a local historic district. The commission there can review exterior features visible from a public way, including doors, under MGL c.40C §5 and §6; ask before replacing a street-facing garage door. Crocker Field, Moran Square and the Academy Street Educational district are on the National Register (MHC inventory).
Nearly a third of units are in two- to four-family buildings. Their garages are often detached, with several bays and doors on old extension springs. Owners and landlords call us for broken springs, doors off track and frozen bottom seals. See off-track repair.
Many pre-1940 garages have narrow openings and low headers. We size doors to the opening and use low-headroom track where needed. A wall-mount opener helps where there's no room above the door.
Fitchburg's Building & Zoning department lets you apply and pay for building, plumbing and gas permits through OpenGov, and says, "We will still accept paper copies of permit applications." Paper applications can be mailed to City Hall at 718 Main St (Fitchburg Building & Zoning). The state chart says a replacement door may need a permit (mass.gov).
On sloped driveways, meltwater can freeze the door to the slab. Free the seal before running the opener.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and repair openers of all brands.
