Hanover is a town of owner-occupied houses. Eighty percent of units are detached, 5% are 1-unit attached and 11% are in buildings of five or more (ACS B25024); 84% of occupied homes are owned. The median home dates to 1978, 21% of units were built in 2000 or later and only 9% before 1940 (ACS B25034).
Hanover appears on the state's coastal-communities list (Massachusetts CZM) because of the tidal North River, which forms part of its border. Homes here are inland, so salt spray is not the issue it is in Scituate. But damp river-valley air still rusts springs and hinges faster than in a dry garage, and a tune-up with lubrication slows that down.
Much of Hanover's stock is garrison and center-entrance colonials with attached two-car garages. On those, the original wood or early steel door has often been replaced once, and the opener is now the weak link. We repair or replace chain-drive units and install belt-drive openers when a bedroom sits over the garage.
The MHC inventory lists the Hanover Center Historic District on the National Register (1996). It is not a local historic district, so a replacement door there does not need a commission certificate. Older houses near the center may have detached barns with doors that need custom sizing.
The state's home-improvement chart lists garage door replacement as a "maybe" and new door installation as a "yes" for a building permit (mass.gov).
Hanover's plowed driveways push packed snow against the bottom of the door. When the bottom seal freezes to the slab, the opener strains and can strip its gear. Clearing the sill and replacing a cracked bottom seal protects the opener.
We install doors from Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr and service openers of any brand.
