Huntington is a hill town of detached houses. Detached houses are 87% of units and two- to four-unit buildings 10% (ACS B25024); 85% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. About 13% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004). Thirty-three percent of units were built before 1940, 35% from 1940 to 1979 and 7% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1963 (ACS B25034).
The state inventory lists the Huntington Village Historic District (1999) on the National Register (MHC inventory). It lists no local historic district, so a Register listing alone doesn't require a review of a new garage door.
About one unit in eight is seasonal. Camps and cottages often have small, unheated garages or sheds that sit closed for months. Springs rust, rollers seize and mice get in under worn seals. Before you open a camp for the season, check the springs and cables before you lift the door.
A third of the housing is from before 1940. Garages may be detached or tucked into a hillside. Openings are often narrow and the floors uneven. We measure and order a door to size, and we can fit low-headroom track where the ceiling is low.
Steep driveways send water and ice to the door. A thicker seal and a clear threshold help the door close. Storms cut power on rural roads; a battery-backup opener keeps the door usable.
Homes from 1940 to 1979 often have attached one-car garages. Many doors there are uninsulated. An insulated steel door keeps an attached garage warmer.
If a spring breaks, leave the door closed and call.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with the town.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
