Georgetown's median housing unit was built in 1974. Forty-four percent of units are from 1940 to 1979, 15% from before 1940 and 19% from 2000 or later (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 81% of units (ACS B25024), and 84% of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
Georgetown's Building Inspector page says the office's services include "the issuance of permits, review of plans, and field inspection of projects," lists office hours of Monday to Thursday, 8am to 3pm, and links to PermitLink for applications (Georgetown Building Inspector). The state's home improvement chart says replacing a garage door may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). When a permit applies, we file it.
Ranches, capes and split-levels from the 1950s to 1970s make up a large part of town. Their garages are often one- or two-car attached, many with original extension springs or openers that lack photo-eye sensors. Prewar houses and barns can have wide or out-of-square openings. We measure carefully and fit the door to the opening.
Leaves and pine needles collect in tracks and at the bottom seal. Clear them in the fall and replace a cracked seal before winter. See weatherstripping.
If a door is bumped and comes off its rollers, don't run the opener. Unplug it and call for off-track repair.
Insulated steel doors come in raised-panel, flush and carriage-style designs. A higher R-value matters most when the garage shares a wall or ceiling with living space. We check headroom and side room before ordering, because some older garages need low-headroom track.
