Berkshire County

Richmond is a Berkshire town of detached, owner-occupied houses. Ninety-four percent of units are single-family detached and 4% are in two- to four-unit buildings (ACS B25024); 90% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Nineteen percent of units were built before 1940, 49% from 1940 to 1979 and 12% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1970 (ACS B25034). About 24% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists the Richmond Furnace Historical and Archaeological District (1999) on the National Register (MHC inventory). No local historic district is listed.
The Building and Zoning Enforcement page says the office reviews applications, issues permits, answers zoning inquiries and performs inspections (Richmond Building and Zoning Enforcement). The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). If your job needs a permit, we prepare the application for the office.
About a quarter of homes are seasonal. A garage at a second home goes long stretches unused. Check these each time you arrive:
A smart opener lets you confirm from home that the door is shut.
Half the homes are from 1940 to 1979. Doors on these often run on aging track that has worked loose from the framing. A loose track lets rollers slip out. We re-anchor brackets into solid wood and plumb the track.
About one in eight homes is from 2000 or later. Their garages usually have insulated doors and ceiling openers now reaching the end of their first set of springs.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
