Holbrook is a postwar town above all. Sixty percent of its housing was built between 1940 and 1979, the median year built is 1957, and just 5% dates from 2000 or later (ACS B25034). Detached homes make up 84% of units and 84% of occupied homes are owner-occupied (ACS B25024).
Most Holbrook garages belong to a 1950s or 1960s ranch or cape. Some are a single attached bay, others a detached garage added later. Those doors often run on extension springs stretched along the horizontal tracks. They work, but without safety cables a broken spring can whip. We add safety cables or convert to a torsion system. Many of these garages also have short driveways and low ceilings, so a compact chain-drive or wall-mount opener may fit better than a full-size unit. Replacing a 1960s wood door with an insulated steel door is the common upgrade.
Holbrook's permit applications page states: "As of January 1, 2020, Building, Sign and Sheetmetal Permits will be online. Paper Permits will not be accepted!" If your project needs a building permit, it goes through the online system. The state chart lists door replacement as a "maybe" for a permit and new door installation as a "yes" (mass.gov).
The MHC inventory lists the Holbrook Square Historic District (2006) on the National Register and no local historic district in town.
For a sound 1960s or 1970s door, regular maintenance matters more than replacement. Lubricating hinges and rollers with a garage-door lubricant, checking that the door stays put when lifted halfway by hand, and keeping the bottom seal clear of ice in winter all extend its life. A door that drops when you let go is out of balance and needs a spring adjustment.
