Westfield is a city of mostly midcentury housing. Forty-eight percent of units were built from 1940 to 1979, 24% before 1940 and 9% in 2000 or later; the median unit dates to 1964 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 60% of units, two- to four-unit buildings 18%, buildings of five or more 16% and mobile homes 3% (ACS B25024). Sixty-nine percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and about 1% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists the United States Whip Company Complex (1983), the Westfield Center Commercial Historic District (2008) and the Westfield Center Historic District (2013) on the National Register (MHC inventory). It shows no local historic district, so Register listing alone doesn't create design review for a home's garage door.
The Building Department announced a "New Online Permitting System - OpenGov Starts July 1, 2026," with one account to apply, pay, track applications and schedule inspections. It enforces the state building code (780 CMR) and local zoning ordinances (Westfield Building Department). The state chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov).
Ranches and capes from the 1950s to 1970s often have one-car garages, attached or under the house. Old doors on extension springs are common. A worn spring can stretch and leave the door uneven; extension spring repair with safety cables fixes it.
Almost a fifth of units are in two- to four-unit buildings. Where a garage is shared, separate keypad codes for each household make access simple to manage.
When a wood door has rotted or warped, replacing it with an insulated steel door makes the garage tighter and the door lighter for the opener. See door replacement.
Check the auto-reverse each month. If the door doesn't reverse when it touches a board on the floor, stop using the opener until it's fixed.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
