Paxton is a small town of owner-occupied detached houses. Detached homes are 89% of units (ACS B25024), and 92% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Fifty-seven percent of units were built from 1940 to 1979, 10% before 1940 and 15% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1967 (ACS B25034).
The state inventory lists the Paxton Historic District (2006) as a local historic district (MHC inventory), and the Moore State Park Historic District (2004) is on the National Register (MHC inventory). Under chapter 40C, the district commission reviews exterior changes that can be seen from a public way (MGL c.40C §5 and §6). If your house is inside the district, check with the commission before replacing a garage door that faces the street.
Most homes date from the 1950s through the 1970s. Many have attached two-car garages with a single wide door. A 16-foot door is heavy, so a broken torsion spring leaves it too heavy for the opener. Leave it closed and call for broken spring repair.
On sloped lots, the garage floor is sometimes out of level, leaving a gap at one corner of the door. A taller bottom seal or a retainer with a bulb seal closes it. See weatherstripping.
Homes from the last 25 years usually have insulated steel doors on torsion springs. Rollers and hinges still need lubrication once a year.
An opener from the 1980s may lack photo-eye sensors. A smart opener adds sensors, battery backup and a phone alert when the door is left open.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with Paxton before starting.
Snowplow piles can block the door. Clear snow from the bottom seal before you open the door.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
