Hampshire County

Middlefield is a small Hampshire County hill town of about 200 housing units. Ninety-eight percent are single-family detached (ACS B25024), and 94% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Thirty-eight percent of units were built before 1940, 15% from 1940 to 1979 and 3% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1971 (ACS B25034). About 14% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists three National Register entries for Middlefield: the Middlefield-Becket Stone Arch Railroad Bridge District (1980), the Middlefield Center Historic District (2012) and the Western Railroad Stone Arch Bridges and Chester Factory Village Depot (2021) (MHC inventory). No local historic district is listed, so Register listing alone doesn't trigger review of a garage door.
Close to four in ten homes predate 1940. Garages here are often barns, sheds or later additions. What we check before hanging a sectional door:
A carriage house door suits an old barn.
About one home in seven is seasonal. Garages left closed for months can have rusted springs and dry rollers. Lift the door halfway by hand before using the opener.
Hill-town snow piles up at doors. Clear the threshold and use a cold-rated lubricant.
Know your opener's emergency release for storm outages.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with the town.
Frayed lift cables at the bottom brackets are a warning. Don't use the door until they're replaced. Cables are under spring tension, so leave the work to a technician.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
