Duxbury is a coastal town of owner-occupied houses. Detached homes are 83% of units and buildings of five or more 12% (ACS B25024); 91% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The median unit dates to 1976; 15% predate 1940, 43% are from 1940 to 1979 and 15% from 2000 or later (ACS B25034). About 3% of units are held for seasonal or occasional use (ACS B25004).
Duxbury has added local districts steadily. The MHC inventory lists eight: Bradford and First Parish Church (2011), Millbrook, Surplus Street, Washington Street and King Caesar (2019), and Winsor and Powder Point (2022). Under the state law that governs them, the commission can review the type and style of doors seen from a public way (MGL c.40C §5 and §6). On Washington Street, Powder Point and the other districts, ask the historic commission before replacing a visible garage door. Many of those old houses have barns or carriage sheds where a carriage house door fits the period.
Duxbury is on the state's coastal-communities list (Massachusetts CZM), on Duxbury Bay and the open ocean. Garage door hardware near the water rusts quickly: springs, cables, hinges and the bottom brackets. Use galvanized hardware where possible and schedule a yearly tune-up.
Most of the rest of town was built from the 1950s to 1990s, with two- and three-car garages. Common repairs are broken torsion springs, worn rollers and openers more than 20 years old. A battery-backup opener helps during coastal storms.
The state's home-improvement chart lists garage door replacement as a "maybe" and new door installation as a "yes" for a building permit (mass.gov).
We source doors from Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
