Bellingham is a postwar town with newer additions. Half its housing (50%) was built from 1940 to 1979, 18% dates from 2000 or later, and the median year built is 1973 (ACS B25034). Detached homes are 74% of units and attached one-unit homes 8% (ACS B25024). Seventy-nine percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
Bellingham's Online Permitting page lets residents apply for building or health permits online. It also offers a public view of building and Board of Health permit activity, which is handy if you want to see what work has been permitted at your address. For a garage door, the state's home-improvement chart lists replacement as a "maybe" for a building permit and new door installation as a "yes" (mass.gov).
The typical Bellingham call is a 1960s or 1970s ranch or split-level with a one- or two-car attached garage. Those garages often have a replacement door from the 1990s and an opener installed with it. Both are now near the end of their life. Chain-drive openers from that period are loud and often lack battery backup; a belt-drive or smart opener is the common upgrade. On the door side, worn rollers and a tired torsion spring are the usual repairs. When the door is replaced, a steel insulated door suits most of these houses.
The Massachusetts Historical Commission inventory lists no local historic district in Bellingham.
On a door and opener of the same age, it often makes sense to replace parts together. When we change a broken torsion spring on a two-spring door, we change both. When we replace an opener, we check the door's balance first, because a new opener on an unbalanced door wears out early. If the door needs both jobs, we tell you so you can plan.
Licensed and insured. Doors from Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr; openers of every brand, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie.
