West Bridgewater is a small town, with 2,978 housing units. Twenty-eight percent predate 1940, 41% date from 1940 to 1979, and the median year built is 1963 (ACS B25034). Detached homes are 75% of units and 82% of occupied homes are owner-occupied (ACS B25024).
West Bridgewater posts a step list on how to file a building permit. The steps include filing a Letter of Determination with the Conservation Commission and getting an approved zoning permit before the building permit application. The page says plumbing, gas or electrical permits may be obtained at the Town Clerk's office. Most garage door work won't need the full list, but a new garage or a wider opening might. For doors, the state's home-improvement chart lists replacement as a "maybe" for a building permit and new door installation as a "yes" (mass.gov).
With more than a quarter of the housing from before 1940, West Bridgewater has its share of farmhouses with barns and detached garages. Those buildings may have wide or odd-sized openings, so a custom-sized steel or carriage-house door is sometimes needed. Postwar ranches have smaller attached garages where the common calls are a broken spring and worn rollers. For a detached garage far from the house, a smart opener lets you check the door from your phone.
The MHC inventory lists the Skim Milk Bridge and Causeway Historic District (2025) on the National Register. It shows no local historic district in West Bridgewater.
A sound older door can still let in a lot of cold. New weatherstripping along the sides and top, a fresh bottom seal and a tune-up that lets the door close fully against the floor often make a noticeable difference before winter.
