Franklin County

Whately is a small farm town of detached houses. Detached houses are 87% of units and two- to four-unit buildings 9% (ACS B25024); 88% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Twenty-six percent of units were built before 1940, 34% from 1940 to 1979 and 13% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1974 (ACS B25034).
The state inventory lists the Whately Center Historic District and the West Whately Historic District, both from 2003, on the National Register (MHC inventory). It shows no local historic district.
The Building Inspector page sends residents to the Franklin County Cooperative Inspection Program website for building, zoning, plumbing and gas, and wiring requirements, and to apply for a permit (Whately Building Inspector). The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We apply through the program when a job needs a permit.
Many properties have barns, equipment sheds or garages separate from the house. For a building used for storage or equipment, a non-insulated steel door is enough. For a heated shop, choose an insulated door with good side and top seals.
About a third of homes are from 1940 to 1979. Many have an attached garage with an older chain-drive opener. If the opener is loud or the door reverses for no reason, check the photo-eyes first: they shift when bumped. Replacing an opener with a belt drive cuts noise.
Dirt roads and field work bring grit into the garage. Wipe the tracks, don't grease them; grease holds dirt.
If a roller jumps the track, don't run the opener. See off-track repair.
A dented bottom section from a tractor or mower can often be replaced on its own if the model is still made. We check the manufacturer label on the door's edge before ordering. See panel replacement.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
