Hampden County

Montgomery is a Hampden County hill town with about 350 housing units. Ninety-nine percent are single-family detached (ACS B25024), and 96% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Nine percent of units were built before 1940, 44% from 1940 to 1979 and 12% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1978 (ACS B25034). About 1% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The median house is from 1978, and only about one in eleven predates 1940. That means most garages here were built with the house: attached one- or two-car bays, a garage under a raised ranch, or a detached garage built at the same time. Doors on these are usually on their second or third replacement, and openers may be decades old.
See broken spring repair.
Raised ranches put the garage under bedrooms. A belt-drive opener and an insulated door cut noise and cold. Check that the door from the garage into the house closes tightly.
Sloped driveways send snowmelt to the door, where it freezes. Clear the threshold and replace a torn bottom seal before winter.
Rural roads lose power in storms. Learn where your opener's emergency release is, or add a battery backup.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with the town.
An outdoor keypad lets family in without a remote. Change the code once in a while.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
