County
Nantucket County and the Town of Nantucket are the same place, and the whole island is a coastal community on the Massachusetts CZM list (CZM).
What sets Nantucket apart for garage doors is design review. The Massachusetts Historical Commission inventory lists the Nantucket Historic District as a local historic district designated in 1970, alongside individually listed areas such as Brant Point Light Station and Sankaty Head Light (MHC inventory). The town's Historic District Commission says that within the entire district no structure may be built or altered in a way that affects its exterior architectural features until the HDC has reviewed and approved it, through a Certificate of Appropriateness application (Nantucket HDC). A garage door is an exterior feature, so plan for that approval before you order one.
The American Community Survey (2020-2024) shows the newest housing stock of any Massachusetts county. The median year built is 1984, and 24% of units were built in 2000 or later, the highest share of any county (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 79% of units, and 72% of occupied homes are owner-occupied (ACS B25024).
Newer houses in a strict design district usually end up with carriage-house doors that look traditional but are built of modern materials. The doors are often custom-sized and heavy. Salt air and wind work on every piece of steel hardware.
A heavy custom door needs springs matched to its real weight. We replace broken springs with coated, high-cycle springs where they fit, and change rusted cables and bottom brackets at the same time; repairs that don't change the door's look are the easy part of island work.
A quiet belt-drive opener or a wall-mount opener suits a finished garage, and a smart opener lets you check the door from off-island. We work on all opener types and brands, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie.
For a new door we work from the HDC-approved design and can source carriage-house and wood-look models from Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr. MassGarage is a family-owned company with 15 years in the trade.
