Hampshire County

Plainfield is a small Hampshire County hill town of about 290 housing units. Ninety-eight percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Detached houses are 93% of units and mobile homes 4% (ACS B25024). Twenty-seven percent of units were built before 1940, 31% from 1940 to 1979 and 14% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1974 (ACS B25034). About 6% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists the Plainfield Center Historic District (2015) on the National Register (MHC inventory). No local historic district is listed.
About a quarter of homes predate 1940. Garages on these properties are often barns, sheds or ells. Before we hang a new door, we check:
A carriage house door fits the look of an older barn.
Three in ten homes are from 1940 to 1979. Many still have extension springs along the tracks. Each should have a safety cable run through it so a broken spring can't fly.
About one in seven homes is from 2000 or later. Insulated doors and ceiling openers on these need springs, rollers and sensor checks at this age.
Snow piles and ice at the threshold cause many winter calls. Clear the door bottom and replace cracked seals before the cold.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with the town.
If a roller jumps its track, stop using the door. Forcing it bends sections. Unplug the opener and call.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
