Shrewsbury grew fast after 1960, and its housing shows it. The median unit was built in 1979; 40% of units are from 1940 to 1979, 15% from 2000 or later and 11% from before 1940 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 65% of units, 1-unit attached 8%, two- to four-unit buildings 6% and buildings of five or more 20% (ACS B25024). Seventy-two percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
The MHC inventory lists the Shrewsbury Historic District as both a local historic district and a National Register district, both dated 1972 MHC inventory. In a local district, the type and style of doors visible from a street count as exterior architectural features (MGL c.40C §5 and §6). If your garage faces the street there, ask the historic commission before replacing the door with a different design.
Many 1960s and 1970s Shrewsbury homes have a garage tucked under the living space. Those garages are short on headroom and the opener sits right under a bedroom or family room. A quieter belt-drive opener or a wall-mount opener helps, and an insulated door keeps the room above warmer.
One unit in five is in a larger building. For association garages we match the door already in place, or replace a single panel after a car strike if the model is still made.
Houses from the 1990s and 2000s usually have two-car doors on torsion springs that are now reaching the end of their cycle life. We replace both springs together so the door stays balanced.
The state chart lists door replacement as a "maybe" and new door installation as a "yes" for a building permit (mass.gov).
We source doors from Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr and repair LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
