Winchendon's housing spans old and new. Twenty-nine percent of units predate 1940, 19% are from 1940 to 1979 and 18% from 2000 or later; the median year is 1981 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 72% of units, two- to four-unit buildings 12% and buildings of five or more 9% (ACS B25024). Seventy-seven percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and about 4% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists the Winchendon Center Historic District (1974) as a local historic district (MHC inventory). The Old Centre Historic District (1987) and the Winchendon Village Historic District (1993) are on the National Register (MHC inventory). In a chapter 40C district, the commission reviews exterior changes visible from a public way (MGL c.40C §5 and §6). If your house is in the local district, ask before you change a street-facing garage door.
The Winchendon Building Department "issues permits and schedules inspections for all building, plumbing, gas fitting, and wiring projects," and permit applications go to the Land Use Clerk (Winchendon Building Department). The state's home improvement chart says replacing a garage door may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov).
Prewar houses often have detached garages or barns with nonstandard openings. Doors may be hinged or sliding. We measure and fit an overhead door that clears the header, using low-headroom track if needed.
Much of the housing dates from 1980 or later. Doors from the 1980s and 1990s are often uninsulated steel with openers that are near the end of their life. A new insulated garage door cuts drafts in an attached garage.
Seasonal homes sit closed for months. Check the door when you open up: lift it by hand to see if it's balanced, and replace remote batteries.
Keep the bottom seal clear of ice. If the door freezes to the floor, free it before you run the opener.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
