Hampden County

Chester is a hill town with older housing. Forty-five percent of units were built before 1940, 22% from 1940 to 1979 and 9% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1951 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 86% of units and two- to four-unit buildings 9% (ACS B25024). Eighty-three percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and about 16% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists five National Register entries for Chester: the Middlefield-Becket Stone Arch Railroad Bridge District (1980), the Chester Center Historic District (1988), the Chester Factory Village Historic District (1989), the North Chester Historic District (1996) and the Western Railroad Stone Arch Bridges and Chester Factory Village Depot (2021) (MHC inventory). None is a local historic district.
The Building Inspector page says permits can be completed online or downloaded, asks applicants to allow at least 48 hours for review, and explains that payment is made online once the inspector sets the status to Ready for Payment (Chester Building Inspector). The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). If a permit is needed, we file it online and allow for the review time.
Close to half the homes are from before 1940. Garages are often separate buildings with narrow openings and uneven floors. Before ordering, we measure the opening at several points, since old openings are rarely square. A door ordered to the smallest measurement, with framing added where needed, seals better than one forced into a crooked opening.
About one unit in six is seasonal. Close the door fully and lock it before leaving for the winter, and check the springs on return.
Cold weather thickens grease and makes doors hard to move. Use a light garage door lubricant, not wheel-bearing grease.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
