Aquinnah is a small town at the western end of Martha's Vineyard. Ninety-six percent of units are single-family detached (ACS B25024), and 80% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Fourteen percent of units were built before 1940, 33% from 1940 to 1979 and 20% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1984 (ACS B25034). About 48% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
Aquinnah is on the state's list of coastal communities (Massachusetts CZM). Salt air may shorten the life of springs, hinges, fasteners and opener parts, so ask about galvanized or stainless hardware and rinse a steel door now and then. Inspect springs and cables more often than you would inland.
The state inventory lists the Gay Head-Aquinnah Town Center Historic District (1999) on the National Register (MHC inventory). No local historic district is listed.
With about half of units seasonal, many garages sit closed all winter. Rust and dried grease are the main problems in spring. Before using the opener after months closed, lift the door by hand halfway. If it's heavy or crooked, stop and call. A smart opener lets an owner check from off-island whether the door is closed.
A fifth of homes are from 2000 or later. Some have wood or composite doors. Wood doors need repainting or resealing every few years on the bottom edge, where water sits.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with the town.
Strong wind can flex a wide door and push it against the stops. A wind-rated door with heavier struts is worth asking about for an exposed site. Keep the door closed during storms.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
