Hingham mixes pre-war streets with a lot of new building. Thirty percent of its housing was built in 2000 or later and 20% before 1940; the median year built is 1976 (ACS B25034). Detached homes are 67% of units and 22% are in buildings of five or more (ACS B25024). Eighty-one percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Massachusetts CZM lists Hingham as one of the state's coastal communities (Massachusetts CZM).
The MHC inventory lists a run of local historic districts in Hingham, including the Lincoln Historic District (1966) and its later extensions, Glad Tidings (1975), Tower - Wilder (1987), Liberty Plain (1988), Bachelor Row - Pear Tree - Lower Main Street (1988) and Hingham Centre (2008). South Hingham (1998) is among its National Register districts. State law makes doors visible from a public way part of a historic district commission's review (MGL c.40C §5 and §6). On those streets, a garage door change usually goes to the commission first. Wood or wood-look carriage-house doors in proportions that match the house are the typical approved choice.
Near the harbor, salt air shortens the life of springs, hinges and track fasteners. On coastal homes we recommend coated or galvanized hardware, a check of the cables and drums at every visit, and a new bottom seal when the old one hardens.
Hingham's Apply for a Permit page uses online permitting for building, plumbing, gas, electrical and sheet metal permits, and warns that "The program is not compatible with Apple product browsers". The page also notes higher electrical, plumbing and gas fees approved by the 2023 Town Meeting. For doors, the state chart lists replacement as a "maybe" for a building permit and new door installation as a "yes" (mass.gov).
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and work on LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
