Bridgewater has grown a lot in recent decades. A quarter of its housing (25%) was built in 2000 or later, and the median year built is 1984; 12% predates 1940 (ACS B25034). Detached homes are 64% of units and buildings of five or more units 18% (ACS B25024). Seventy-six percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
The MHC inventory lists the Bridgewater Center Historic District (2001) as a local historic district and the Bridgewater Iron Works (2002) on the National Register. Inside the local district, state law makes the style of street-visible doors part of the commission's review (MGL c.40C §5 and §6). A garage on the town center streets may need that approval before a new door goes on.
Bridgewater's Building page says "Contractors and homeowners must apply online". Paper applications are still accepted, but "an additional $50 administrative fee will apply". That $50 is a Town of Bridgewater government fee, not a MassGarage price (as of October 28, 2026, per the town page). Whether a door job needs a permit at all depends on scope. The state's chart lists door replacement as a "maybe" and new door installation as a "yes" (mass.gov).
For houses built since the 1990s, garages are usually attached with insulated doors, and the first openers are reaching the end of their life. We replace failed openers with belt-drive or smart openers, re-tension or replace torsion springs, and swap worn rollers that make a door loud. On the older houses near the center, the job is more often a full door replacement in a style that fits.
Don't try to lift a door with a broken spring, and don't run the opener. The door is very heavy without the spring's help.
We install doors from Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
