Stow is a town of single-family homes. Detached houses make up 80% of units, attached units 5% and buildings of five or more 9% (ACS B25024). Eighty-five percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. A quarter of units (25%) were built in 2000 or later, 38% from 1940 to 1979 and 22% before 1940; the median unit dates to 1974 (ACS B25034). About 1% of units are seasonal or occasional-use homes (ACS B25004).
Stow's Building Department asks you to call the office to schedule a building inspection, and states that "Inspections are performed Monday through Friday from 9 am to 11 am." Wiring inspections are booked with the inspector directly, Monday to Thursday between 10 am and noon (Stow Building Department). If a permit applies to your door, plan for a weekday-morning visit. The state chart lists replacing a garage door as a possible permit item and a new installation as a definite one (mass.gov).
More than a fifth of Stow's homes predate 1940. Those properties often have barns or detached garages with wide or uneven openings, and we size the door to the opening instead of forcing a standard size. Homes built since 2000 usually have attached two- or three-car garages with torsion springs and wide doors.
A 16-foot insulated door needs a matched pair of torsion springs. If one snaps, don't try to lift the door by hand or with the opener. Torsion spring repair replaces both springs and resets the balance.
On a lot set back from the road, a smart opener can tell you whether the door is closed and let you close it from your phone.
Nylon rollers with sealed bearings run quieter than old steel rollers. Replacing worn rollers and tightening hinges often cures a door that rattles.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
