Lenox's housing includes older houses, condominiums and apartments. Detached houses are 57% of units, buildings of five or more 26%, two- to four-unit buildings 9% and attached houses 7% (ACS B25024). Seventy-one percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and about 16% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004). Thirty percent of units were built before 1940, 39% from 1940 to 1979 and 17% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1966 (ACS B25034).
The state inventory lists three local historic districts from 1975: the Lenox Historic District, Church on the Hill and Trinity Episcopal Church (MHC inventory). Register listings also include Ventfort Hall and the Lenox Village Historic District. In a chapter 40C district, exterior changes visible from a public way go to the commission (MGL c.40C §5 and §6).
Lenox shares its Building Inspections Department with neighboring towns. The department reviews permit applications, issues permits, answers zoning inquiries and performs inspections, and residents may consult an inspector during office hours (Lenox Shared Building Inspections Department). The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov).
A quarter of units are in larger buildings, and many condominium garages are managed by an association. Check the rules before replacing your door or opener; we can match the style used on the rest of the building.
About one unit in six is seasonal. A smart opener lets you check the door from away, and a fall check prepares it for winter.
Pre-1940 homes often have carriage houses or detached garages. A carriage-style door suits them.
Some older properties keep a separate carriage house used as a garage. Wide or arched openings may need a custom-sized door. We measure the opening and, if the building is in a local district, help you bring the commission a drawing and a sample of the material before ordering.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
