West Tisbury is all detached houses: 100% of units are single-family detached (ACS B25024), and 92% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Forty-eight percent of units are seasonal (ACS B25004), and the town is on the state coastal-communities list (Massachusetts CZM). Twenty-two percent of units were built from 1940 to 1979, 6% before 1940 and 5% in 2000 or later, so about two-thirds date from 1980 to 1999; the median year is 1985 (ACS B25034).
The state inventory lists the West Tisbury Historic District (2000) as a local historic district and the Polly Hill Arboretum Historic District (2015) on the National Register (MHC inventory). In a chapter 40C district, exterior changes visible from a public way go to the commission (MGL c.40C §5 and §6).
The Building Department uses an Electronic Permit Management System: building permit applications are online, and building permits and inspections can be paid for online (West Tisbury Building Department). The state's home improvement chart says a replacement door may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We apply online when needed.
Houses from those two decades are now thirty to forty-five years old. Many have their first or second garage door, with wood or thin steel sections and openers that lack battery backup. Swapping to an insulated steel door in a wood-grain finish keeps the rural look.
Detached garages and barns are common on larger lots. A wide or tall opening can take a custom-sized sectional door.
On an island, moisture and salt air can rust springs and hinges. Coated hardware helps, and so does a yearly check.
If the house is empty all winter, a caretaker can use a smart opener to check the door.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
