Franklin County
Gill is a small town of detached houses. Detached houses are 89% of units and two- to four-unit buildings 8% (ACS B25024); 82% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Twenty-seven percent of units were built before 1940, 35% from 1940 to 1979 and 13% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1968 (ACS B25034).
The state inventory lists the Turner's Falls Historic District (1982), the Riverside Village Historic District (2017) and the Gill Center Historic District (2018) for Gill on the National Register (MHC inventory). It shows no local historic district, so Register listing alone doesn't require approval for a garage door.
The town's Building Permits & Inspections page says Gill uses the regional Franklin County Cooperative Inspection Program for most of its inspection needs (Gill Building Permits & Inspections). The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). If your door needs a permit, we apply through the regional program.
Older properties often have barns and sheds. Wide barn openings can take a custom-sized sectional door, or we can repair existing slider hardware. For a storage building, a non-insulated steel door is enough.
Ranches and capes from 1940 to 1979 often have an attached one- or two-car garage. Their springs, rollers and openers may be decades old. A tune-up shows what's worn.
Snow and ice collect at the threshold. Free a frozen door before using the opener, and replace a cracked seal.
