Berkshire County

Alford is a small southern Berkshire town of about 400 housing units. Ninety-eight percent are single-family detached (ACS B25024), and 89% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Twenty-four percent of units were built before 1940, 34% from 1940 to 1979 and 19% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1975 (ACS B25034). About 34% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists the Alford Center Historic District (2021) as a local historic district (MHC inventory). In a chapter 40C district, exterior changes visible from a public way go to the commission (MGL c.40C §5 and §6). If your garage faces the road inside the district, talk to the commission before ordering a new door.
The Building Inspections & Permits page says the Building Inspector is available by appointment only and that building permits are managed online through the Berkshire Online Permitting Program (Alford Building Inspections & Permits). The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We prepare the online application when a permit is needed.
A third of homes are seasonal. Garages at these houses sit closed for weeks. Have the springs and cables checked at the start of each season, and consider a smart opener to check the door from away.
About one home in five is from 2000 or later. Insulated doors and ceiling openers from those years now need spring and roller service.
A quarter of homes predate 1940. Their barns and carriage sheds often need custom-sized doors.
Replace a cracked bottom seal before the snow.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
