Holliston is a town of single-family houses: 80% of units are detached, 6% are 1-unit attached and only 8% sit in buildings of five or more (ACS B25024). Eighty-seven percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied. The median home was built in 1966, more than half of the stock (54%) dates from 1940 to 1979, 18% is older than 1940 and 13% is from 2000 or later (ACS B25034).
Ranches, capes and colonials from that era were built with one- or two-car attached garages, and many still run their second or third door. When a torsion spring snaps on one of these doors, we replace both springs as a matched pair so the door stays balanced. The other common fixes are cracked bottom sections, dried-out weatherstripping and openers whose safety sensors no longer line up. A tune-up catches most of that before it strands a car.
The MHC inventory lists two National Register districts in town, the Thomas Hollis Historic District and East Holliston. National Register listing does not by itself bring a local design review, so a door change there is normally a building-code question, not a historic-commission one.
The building department runs on online permitting software. A first-time applicant has to upload a copy of the license plus workers' compensation and liability insurance, and "All building permit applications must be paid for before they will be put in the queue to be reviewed" (Holliston Building). On the state chart a replacement door is a "maybe" and a new opening a "yes" (mass.gov).
If the door will not open, check whether the opener light flashes and whether one spring above the door shows a gap. A broken spring means the car stays inside until the spring is replaced; please do not pull the emergency cord and lift a door that is suddenly very heavy.
Licensed and insured. Proof of insurance, license and 1099 available on request.
