LiftMaster sells its openers through installing dealers and describes them as engineered for performance and installed by the pros. (source: LiftMaster) The residential range is split into three tiers: the Premium Series, the Plus Series and the Basic Series, with the 2420L and 2220L listed as popular Basic models. (source: LiftMaster) Premium examples include the 4690L chain drive with battery backup and a built-in camera, the 6690L belt drive, and the 98022 wall mount. Start with the model number on the motor unit or in the manual. The other thing to find is the learn button: LiftMaster says it sits at the back of the opener and may be hidden behind a panel or the light lens, and its color tells you which remotes and keypads are compatible. (source: LiftMaster) Look for that colored button before buying any accessory.
Worth repairing: a LiftMaster from 1993 or later that still lifts the door smoothly once the door itself is balanced. If the door is heavy because a spring has failed, fix the spring first; an opener should never be asked to lift an unbalanced door (broken spring repair).
Worth replacing: an opener made before 1993. LiftMaster's remote and keypad lineup requires openers built in 1993 or later, and the company publishes a separate position on openers older than that. (source: LiftMaster) (source: LiftMaster) Replacement is also the usual call when you want features an old unit lacks, such as battery backup or myQ app control, which the Premium models include. A note on motor ratings: LiftMaster lists the 6690L at a 1-1/4 HP *equivalent* and states that DC motor lift capacity is not measured in HP. (source: LiftMaster) Comparing horsepower across brands is not very meaningful on DC units.
