Safety sensors are the pair of small units mounted low on each side of the door opening, aiming an invisible beam across it. When something breaks the beam while the door is closing, the opener stops and reverses. LiftMaster tests its openers to the UL 325 safety standard and says its safety accessories are designed and tested to work together with its openers. (source: LiftMaster)
Garaga gives two simple checks to do monthly. (source: Garaga)
If either test fails, Garaga's advice is to stop using the door and call for service. (source: Garaga)
Amarr lists blocked or misaligned photo eyes as a cause of a door that won't close all the way, and misaligned eyes as one reason a remote seems not to work. (source: Amarr) Garaga's upkeep advice is to keep the sensors clean and properly aligned. (source: Garaga) In practice that means checking for a cobweb, dirt on a lens or a bumped bracket before assuming a sensor has failed. Never bypass or tape sensors together to make a door close.
Sensors are matched to the opener, not the door. Clopay's parts guide says to match a safety sensor to your opener model from its manual or label. (source: Clopay) On Genie openers, the Safe-T-Beam system is listed as backward compatible with all Genie residential openers that use a safety beam system. (source: Genie) (source: Wayne Dalton)
Working sensors also matter for add-ons. Chamberlain's myQ Smart Garage Control needs an opener with standard safety sensors, photoelectric ones that don't shut off. (source: Chamberlain) Genie's universal remotes likewise call for working safety sensors. (source: Genie) See smart openers.
Cleaning and re-aiming fixes many sensor faults. A cracked lens, chewed or corroded wire, or a sensor that won't hold a signal after alignment needs replacing. If the opener is old enough that matching sensors are hard to find, that's one of the times a new opener is worth pricing; see opener service.
