Haverhill's housing comes in layers. The American Community Survey (2020-2024) shows 38% of units built in 1939 or earlier, 25% from 1940 to 1979, and a median year built of 1964 (ACS B25034). Detached single-family homes are 41% of units and 1-unit attached homes, mostly townhouses and condos, another 10%; 63% of homes are owner-occupied (ACS B25024).
The pre-war houses in the older neighborhoods have small detached garages, often with wood doors that have been patched for decades. The mid-century houses have attached one- and two-car garages. And the townhouse and condo complexes have rows of matching single doors where the association sets the style.
Each one needs a different approach. Old wood doors are often worth replacing with a light steel or carriage-house door rather than repairing again. Mid-century attached garages mostly need spring and opener work. In a condo row, matching the existing door model matters, so we note the manufacturer and design before ordering. We can source doors from Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr, which covers most association specs. On openers, we install and service all brands, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie.
The Massachusetts Historical Commission inventory lists local historic districts at Bradford Common (1975), Rocks Village (1974) and the Washington Street Shoe district (1982) (MHC inventory). In a local district, MGL c.40C makes doors visible from a public way exterior architectural features, and a commission certificate is needed before they change (c.40C §5 and §6). If your house is inside one, expect review for a new door.
In winter, slush freezes the bottom seal to the slab. Forcing a frozen door with the opener can strip the opener gear or bend the top section. Free the seal first. A new weatherstrip and a tune-up in the fall help.
