Princeton is a town of owner-occupied detached houses. Ninety-four percent of units are single-family detached (ACS B25024), and 94% of occupied homes are owned. Twenty-nine percent of units predate 1940 and 29% are from 1940 to 1979, while 13% are from 2000 or later; the median year is 1975 (ACS B25034). About 3% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists five National Register districts: Princeton Center (1999), East Princeton Village (2004), Russell Corner (2006), West Village (2009) and Four Corners - Goodnow Farm (2015) (MHC inventory). It lists no local historic district, so a garage door change doesn't need district approval.
The Princeton Building Department offers online permitting, and inspections other than driveway inspections are scheduled through the department office (Princeton Building Department). The state's home improvement chart lists a garage door replacement as a possible permit item and a new installation as a yes (mass.gov).
Many older homes sit on large lots with barns or detached garages. Openings can be wide, low or out of square. We measure and fit a door to the opening, and a carriage house door keeps a traditional look.
Houses from this era often have attached two-car garages with original uninsulated doors. An insulated steel door keeps the garage warmer and runs quieter.
On rural lots, power outages can leave the car inside. An opener with battery backup keeps working for a number of cycles. Learn where your manual release is, and pull it only with the door closed.
Ice can lock the bottom seal to the floor. Free it before running the opener.
An unheated detached garage can use a non-insulated steel door. If you use it as a workshop in winter, an insulated door and a tight bottom seal hold heat better. Windows in the top section let in daylight without opening the door.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
