Taunton's housing splits three ways. In the American Community Survey (2020-2024), 35% of units date to 1939 or earlier, 30% to 1940-1979 and the rest to 1980 on, with a median year built of 1965 (ACS B25034). Detached single-family houses are 45% of units, two- to four-unit buildings 29%, and 62% of homes are owner-occupied (ACS B25024).
The Massachusetts Historical Commission inventory lists the Church Green Local Historic District (1979) in Taunton (MHC inventory). State law defines a local district's exterior architectural features to include doors open to view from a public way, and nothing visible changes without a commission certificate (MGL c.40C §5 and §6). For a garage that faces the street there, start with the commission and expect a traditional door, such as a carriage-house style.
Pre-war houses (about a third of the city) tend to have detached garages that were built for a single small car. Low headroom, settled slabs and soft jambs are common. A lighter steel door, low-headroom track and a wall-mount opener are the usual fixes.
Mid-century houses mostly have attached single or double garages, many on their second door. Springs, cables and rollers are the wear items.
Houses from 1980 on have the standard 16-foot double or paired single doors and often the first or second opener. Here the calls are about openers as much as springs. We service and install every opener brand, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Genie, and smart openers are an easy upgrade.
The state's home-improvement chart lists door replacement as "maybe" needing a building permit and door installation as "yes" (mass.gov). Taunton's building department decides for your address. For landlords of the two- and three-families: we're licensed and insured, and proof of insurance, license and 1099 are available on request.
We can source doors from Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr, from basic steel to insulated and carriage styles.
