Barre's housing is split between old and new. Thirty-five percent of units predate 1940, 25% are from 1940 to 1979 and 25% from 2000 or later; the median year is 1971 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 75% of units, with two- to four-unit buildings and buildings of five or more at 9% each (ACS B25024). Seventy-six percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
The state inventory lists the Barre Common Historic District (1976) on the National Register (MHC inventory). It shows no local historic district, so Register listing alone doesn't require approval to replace a garage door.
The Barre Building Department page says it "does not accept permit applications or documents online or by email" (Barre Building Department). Applications go in on paper. The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). When a permit is needed, we prepare the paperwork and file it with the department.
Older properties often have barns or carriage sheds now used as garages. Openings are seldom standard, and framing may need work before a new door goes in. A carriage house door that opens overhead keeps the look of hinged doors.
A quarter of homes are from the last 25 years, typically with insulated steel doors on torsion springs. Springs wear out with use. If the door feels heavy or the opener strains, check for a gap in the spring.
A wall-mount opener frees ceiling space in a garage used for storage. Battery backup helps during outages.
Keep the bottom seal clear of ice. Free a frozen door before using the opener. See weatherstripping.
A door that shudders, sits crooked or leaves a gap on one side usually has a worn roller, a loose hinge or a spring that has lost tension. Catching it early can prevent a cable from coming off its drum. See cable and drum repair.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
