Norfolk County

Milton is a prewar town. Forty-six percent of its housing was built before 1940, and the median year built is 1945 (ACS B25034). Detached single-family homes are 75% of units and 85% of occupied homes are owner-occupied (ACS B25024). Massachusetts CZM also lists Milton as one of the state's coastal communities (Massachusetts CZM).
A house built before 1940 often has a garage that came later, usually a detached one- or two-car building at the back of the lot. Those garages have low ceilings, short driveways and sometimes no power for an opener. We use low-headroom track, wall-mount openers where the ceiling is tight, and carriage-house doors that look right next to a period house. Old wooden doors with rotted bottoms are a common sight. In the low, damp areas near the water, salt air can corrode hardware, so ask about rust-resistant parts.
The MHC inventory lists a long run of National Register districts in Milton, including the Dorchester-Milton Lower Mills Industrial District (1980), Milton Centre (1988), Milton Hill (1995), Brush Hill (1998), Railway Village (2000), the Eustis Estate (2016) and the Davenport Estate (2018). It lists no local historic district in Milton, so state c.40C review does not show up in the layer. Ask the town whether any local review applies on your street, and pick a door that suits the house either way.
Milton's Inspectional Services guidance says permits for simple projects, "such as roofing, siding, or window replacement", can be handled electronically. It also notes that work must begin within six months of a permit being issued, and that building inspectors hold walk-in hours each morning. On garage doors, the state chart lists replacement as a "maybe" and new door installation as a "yes" (mass.gov).
We work with Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and repair LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
