Berkshire County

Egremont is a southern Berkshire town with many second homes. About 37% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004). Ninety-three percent of units are single-family detached and 4% are in buildings of five or more (ACS B25024); 82% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Twenty-seven percent of units were built before 1940, 38% from 1940 to 1979 and 7% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1969 (ACS B25034).
The state inventory lists the South Egremont Village Historic District (1984), the North Egremont Historic District (1989) and the Westover-Bacon-Potts Farm (1990) on the National Register (MHC inventory). No local historic district is listed.
The Building & Inspections page says Egremont is a Green Community that has adopted and will enforce the Stretch Energy Code. It accepts building permits online, and the Building Inspector holds office hours on Tuesdays from 12:30 to 3:30 PM or by appointment (Egremont Building & Inspections). The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). For an attached garage, an insulated door with good seals helps keep heat in the house.
With more than a third of homes seasonal, many garages sit idle for weeks. A smart opener lets owners check and close the door from a phone. Have the springs and cables checked at the start of each season.
Four in ten homes are from 1940 to 1979. Their garages often have newer doors on old hardware. Loose track brackets and worn hinges make a door shake and bind.
Older houses in the villages may have carriage barns used as garages. Wide, low openings often call for a custom-sized door.
Replace a stiff, cracked bottom seal before snow.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
