North Andover has a wide range of homes. The median unit was built in 1979. Fourteen percent of units predate 1940, 37% are from 1940 to 1979 and 19% from 2000 or later (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 53% of units, attached units 11%, two- to four-unit buildings 10% and buildings of five or more 25% (ACS B25024). Seventy percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied.
Two local designations appear in the MHC inventory: the North Andover Historic District and the Kittredge Mansion, both from 1987. A local district commission may review exterior work visible from a public way, doors included, under MGL c.40C §5 and §6. Owners in the district should ask the historic commission before ordering a new garage door. The North Andover Center, Machine Shop Village and Tavern Acres districts are on the National Register (MHC inventory).
Pre-1940 homes often have detached garages or carriage barns with narrow openings and low headers. We fit low-headroom track where needed, and a carriage house door matches many of those buildings.
Houses from the 1970s through the 2000s usually have attached two- and three-car garages. Wide insulated doors are heavy, and the torsion springs are sized to the door. If one spring breaks, we replace both so the door stays balanced. See torsion spring repair.
With more than a third of units attached or in larger buildings, many owners live under association rules. Associations often set the door model and color, so we match the existing door or replace a single section with panel replacement.
The state's home improvement chart says door replacement is a "maybe" and new installation a "yes" for a building permit (mass.gov).
We supply Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and repair openers of every brand.
