Great Barrington combines an old downtown with postwar and rural housing. Thirty-six percent of units were built before 1940, 28% from 1940 to 1979 and 12% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1958 (ACS B25034). Detached houses are 74% of units, attached houses 6%, two- to four-unit buildings 9% and buildings of five or more 12% (ACS B25024). Sixty-nine percent of occupied homes are owner-occupied, and about 8% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists three local historic districts: the Searles Castle Historic District (1989), District A, the Downtown Historic District (1995), and District C (1995) (MHC inventory). Register listings include Monument Mills and the Taconic and West Avenues Historic District. In a chapter 40C district, exterior changes visible from a public way go to the commission (MGL c.40C §5 and §6). Ask before replacing a garage door you can see from the street.
The Building Department page says the office issues permits, performs inspections and keeps records, and coordinates inspection reviews with other town officials (Great Barrington Building Department). The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov).
Pre-war homes often have a detached garage or a converted barn. Openings may be uneven, and old wood doors are heavy. A lighter steel or composite door eases the load on springs and the opener.
Part-time owners can use a smart opener to check that the door is shut. A check before the season catches a broken spring or a stiff seal.
Snow and ice at the threshold stop the door from closing. Keep the slab clear, and replace a seal that has cracked.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
