New Salem is a small, rural town of detached houses. Ninety-three percent of units are single-family detached (ACS B25024), and 89% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Thirty-nine percent of units were built before 1940, 20% from 1940 to 1979 and 12% in 2000 or later; the median year is 1973 (ACS B25034). About 4% of units are seasonal (ACS B25004).
The state inventory lists the New Salem Common Historic District (1978) on the National Register (MHC inventory). It shows no local historic district for the town, so a garage door choice near the common isn't reviewed on that basis alone.
Close to four in ten houses are pre-1940. Their garages were usually added later: a converted shed, a barn bay or a small detached building. The openings are seldom a standard size, and the slab may slope. We measure height, width, headroom and side room, then order a door to fit. If the header is too low for standard track, low-headroom hardware can help.
A garage that stores firewood collects bark and grit in the tracks and rollers. Brush out the track bottoms in fall and keep wood stacked away from the door's path.
Rural roads lose power in storms. A battery-backup opener lets you get a car out during an outage. If yours has none, learn where the red emergency release is and how to lift the door by hand.
If a cable hangs loose or the door sits crooked, leave it closed. The door can drop if the cable lets go. See cable and drum repair.
The state's home improvement chart says a garage door replacement may need a permit and a new installation does (mass.gov). We confirm with the town.
We install Clopay, Garaga, Wayne Dalton and Amarr doors and service LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie and other openers.
